I am a Barefoot Trimmer working in south-central Indiana. My approach to equine hoofcare follows Pete Ramey’s research into wild horse hooves and the relationship between structure and correct function of the equine hoof.
My clients include trail horses, performance horses and pasture pets of all breeds, including drafts, gaited horses, donkeys, mules and minis. I am experienced with a variety of hoof pathologies, and rehabilitation forms a large part of my practice. I am experienced with rehabilitating and managing founder, laminitis, white line disease, navicular syndrome, chronic abscessing, contracted heels, flared walls, hoof capsule distortion, underdeveloped or degenerated digital cushions, and thin soles, as well as problems with movement such as tenderness over gravel, toe-tipping, short-striding, over-reaching, paddling and ‘rough’ or ‘jerky’ gaits.
Following Ramey’s philosophy, my primary goal in each of my trims is to improve soundness by encouraging correct movement; my goal in each trim is to have the horse walk off more comfortably than before the trim. To that end, I also recommend and fit hoof boots, when necessary. Although the phrase is “No hoof, no horse,” the relationship is not one way; a variety of factors influence hoof health and soundness, and therefore I also offer advice on diet and natural horse-keeping.
For more information on barefoot trimming, I recommend Pete Ramey’s first book, Making Natural Hoof Care Work. It provides an overview of hoof anatomy and function, as well as an introduction to the natural hoof trim and the philosophy behind it, that would benefit any owner. For more detailed trimming information, I recommend his website, http://www.hoofrehab.com, which provides additional articles on specific pathologies and rehabilitation protocols.
